Zadya Jo. Abbott is the host for the radio show She Lovely on KAOR 91.1 FM. She is a Senior from Vermillion, South Dakota majoring in Media and Journalism and minoring in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of South Dakota (USD). Besides her show, Zadya loves going on walks with her cats, hanging out with her family, and sewing her own clothes. One thing she believes in is being gentle to oneself and caring for oneself. This is sometimes a struggle as she has thoughts of not feeling that she can do something, but with the help of her mother, she is able to overcome this. Her favorite song is “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder which is the inspiration for her show name and plays at the end of every broadcast.
She Lovely is in its fourth year running. It airs on Fridays at five. On this show, she talks about being a black woman and pop culture. Her main point of the show is to create a community through this platform. One way she does this is by calling her listeners “lovelies”. Zadya intends to bring on guests that have been influential to her throughout her education at USD onto She Lovely. Some of these guests consist of USD’s clubs such as Spectrum: Gender and Sexuality Alliance and the International club. A lot of her inspiration comes from social media and podcasts. Zadya struggles to keep her mind calm, and this show has helped her understand herself by giving her a platform to share stories about herself. She would like potential lovelies to know that this is a show that is able to be put on the background, although it is also great to pay attention to.
As of now, Zadya is an intern at South Dakota Public Broadcasting, and after she finishes this year, she wants to work in radio in news broadcasting. She also plans to make She Lovely her own podcast at some point. In five years, she sees herself living in D.C. working in a stereotypical position of wearing pencil skirts while working in a big, city corporate position that is awarding to her.
