"Justine" Julia Stone - Song Review

Updated: Apr 13

Julia Stone is an Australian, folk singer who writes love songs that challenge the idea of looking for something bigger and better in relationships. She has worked with her brother Angus on songs. On one project, they worked together to create some songs for the video game, Life is Strange: True Colors. One of her songs that Coyote Radio plays is “Justine” which will now be reviewed.

The song starts out with Julia wanting to live in the love of a relationship she is in. She wants him to open up to her about his real, deep, and dark feelings. She is afraid she is putting her all into the relationship which could lead it to failure because he won’t open up.

The main focus is that Julia has a plan for her and this man. She wants to someday live together in California and get along with him in a way that makes him open up.

Later, she sings about wanting to see his inside beauty and understand who he really is. She questions his belief in her because he cannot express it like she can express her belief in him becoming a better person.

This is a complex song for some because of the words, but that makes the song more interesting.
