Issues With Dating Apps - "Pick Me" by Alec Benjamin - Song Review

Updated: Apr 13

Alec Benjamin, a musician from Arizona, has past struggles with mental health, but through his love of music, he has pushed through it. Since the beginning of his career, his goal in music is to be sincere with it. He puts out music about tough subjects. His latest song “Pick Me” takes on the subject of dating apps.

Throughout the song, Alec mentions lying as it is a big thing for people to do on dating apps and social media. People will lie about insecurities such as height, age, or education. Alec understands that it is hard to sift through everyone to figure out who is lying or not. It is also hard to be authentic with all the pressure dating has become. He mentions using pick up lines and how they are viewed as cringey.

Alec mentions lying about how two people on a date met. I believe he mentions this because he would rather meet someone naturally like at a party, coffee shop, or even through a friend than meet someone through a dating app.

The idea of a dating app is that you can view basic information about a person to see if you would like to know more about them. Some of these basics are your zodiac sign, how far away you live, and likes. Throughout the chorus of “Pick Me”, Alec mentions these things about himself and being truthful about it, and based on that, he wants a woman to choose over her other options.

He also mentions that when he finds someone on one of these apps, he doesn’t like to wait for a reply, and he thinks having a conversation in person would be easier since that would be an instant reply.

In conclusion, “Pick Me” is a song about modern dating with dating apps and the issues that come with it. I think he does a great job executing this concept without it being obvious in a way that would make it cringey.
