1989 Taylor's Version Album Review

Updated: Apr 13

Taylor Swift is one of the most famous pop music artists out there. 1989, her fifth album, was released October 27, 2014. The name “1989” symbolizes her rebirth since it is her birth year, and this album was her switch from country to pop music. Once she decided to switch record labels, 1989 was one of her original albums that she would not own, so she rereleased it nine years later on October 27, 2023 as her fourth rereleased album. I am going to go over songs from the vault in 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

Taylor’s 17th song on her album is about being shamed but also proud of her relationship. In the first verse, It starts off light. Taylor sets the scene about being young and on a date. In the prechorus, she sings faster like falling in love. In the chorus, Taylor sings about being dressed up for him, but she doesn't mind because she is with her lover. In the second verse, she sings about how everyone wants him, but he loves her, and he’s a gentleman. In the bridge, Taylor sings about spending morning time with her lover, and how they take their time getting ready because they don't want to leave each other’s side. He is not in love with her yet or he’s scared to do so.

“Say Don’t Go" is Taylor's 18th song in her album. It is about intense romantic feelings. In the first verse, Taylor sings about knowing her feelings from the start, but she knows although they won’t go away, the relationship will not last. In the prechorus, she describes how she is scared and alone because she is leaving him because of her feelings. In the chorus, Taylor wants him to beg her to stay, but he won’t since he hurt her by leading her on. In the second verse, she sings about how she does not feel stable because of her love for him. She doesn’t feel like it’s fair because she feels this way, and he doesn’t. In the second prechorus, she tries to read her crush’s feelings. In the bridge, Taylor sings questions over and over like racing thoughts until she screams out "I love you" because of her frustration with her feelings and his silent response.

“Now That We Don’t Talk" is the 19th song on her album. It is about feeling saddened that her ex moved on. In the first verse, Taylor sings about her ex going to a party. I can assume he does not do that regularly or if he does, she gets very anxious because Taylor asks if he got anxious on the way home, and whatever he gets anxious about, she is usually there for him, but now they aren’t in each other's lives. Her ex changed, but she doesn’t like it. In the chorus, Taylor sings about calling up her mother to talk about it, but she thinks it is for the best that he moves on. In the second verse, she wonders if her ex told his friends about them. She can’t stay friends with him because she still loves him. At the end, Taylor sings about how although she doesn’t feel like it, she must be better off without him as well.

“Suburban Legends" is the 20th song in her album. It is about a romance that she ended but regrets doing so. In the first verse, Taylor sings about how she quickly forgives her lover. In the chorus, she sings about a love that is memorable. In the second verse, Taylor sings about how being together would be surprising because of their differences. In the bridge, she sings with a sense of urgency as she describes running down the neighborhood to see him again because she broke it off. The beat is fast and light like her urgency and love that she feels for her lover.

“Is It Over Now" is her 21st and last song on her album. It is about cheating. In the first verse, Taylor sings about a relationship ending and being taunted by her thoughts and feelings for him. In the prechorus, she sets the scene of running into him in the future at a coffee shop. In the chorus, she wonders when the cheating stopped or if it even did. In the second verse, Taylor sings about her ex losing control. In the bridge, she sings about keeping things private unlike her ex.

Taylor Swift has come a long way in her singing career, and her Taylor’s Version albums are proof of her growth as an artist and person, and as of November 2023, she has two more albums to rerelease.
